Harmony of Form and Function

Out of necessity, both the design and function of furniture are important features. When furniture is planned for a public facility, other special requirements also come into play. In addition to the visual impact, functionality and flexibility are principal deciding factors.

The design of the reception desk by the architect Detlef Mevius of iproplan GmbH in Chemnitz for the new city hall building in Neuenhagen near Berlin meets these high requirements. In collaboration with the architect and the end customer, 5D Engineering developed the technical solution for the practical implementation of the design. Behind an elegantly curved front with a precisely executed decorative edge at the top, technical equipment, PC workstations and the possibility to provide advice to citizens had to be brought into the proper balance.

Beginning with the creation of a 3-dimensional model for the tendering documents and contract specifications, through the production drawings for the workshop and the external audit from production to installation, including project management and assembly organization, the responsibility lay by 5D Engineering.

The result is a visually appealing piece of furniture suitable for everyday use that fits appropriately into the curved ground floor space.

The successful result derived from the collaboration of architects, 5D Engineering and the manufacturer, Rosskopf + Partner AG, was a convincing success for the customer, the municipality of Neuenhagen.

5D Engineering was involved in the following tasks:

  • 3D design planning
  • Preparation of service specifications with explanatory drawings
  • Assistance in tendering and the recommendation of potential manufacturers
  • Work planning, including preparation of the CNC-machine programming and component drawings for fabrication
  • Quality assurance during production
  • Project management, including assembly organization through to defect-free delivery to the customer
